COAL-BASED FUEL FOR POWER AND INDUSTRY:
MODERN TRENDS AND PERSPECTIVES
OF PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND USE

Objective

The main objective of the event is to share knowledge, expertise and experience of academic scientists and industrial research engineers, who are working in coal-chemical and power engineering areas for successful resolving the problem of natural gas and oil replacement in the industrial and power engineering applications by coal-based fuels and to present advanced scientific and engineering projects along with innovative ideas to a wide range of interested stakeholders.

Background

Due to insufficient reserves of oil and natural gas, the coal serves as the main energy source in the Ukraine Coal is important natural resource of Ukraine economy and can cover the growing national power demand. In accordance to Power Strategy of Ukraine the coal consumption will be increased to 97.7 million tonnes by 2015. However, most of Ukrainian coal grades are low quality, because of many contaminants, water and sulfur constituents. That is why there is very important to use maximum of physicchemical potential of the available coal taking into account the customer requirements (technical, economical and environmental) to the end product. The same problems are valid for the waste management processes at the coal-preparation plants as well.

Many countries worldwide, including Germany, USA, South Africa, China, Great Britain, pursue the direction of coal-based fuels development. For instance, the Russian analytics report, that Russian oil and natural gas resources are ten times less than coal ones. Modern trends of Russian Oil and Gas Industry will lead to the fact that the structure of energy sources will irreversibly change towards to increased consumption of coal-based fuels.

Finally, the worldwide average price ratio of the natural gas and coal-based fuel is about 2.2 3.0 Furthermore, a distribution of coal resources is more uniform across the world map, than oil and natural gas distribution, as well as coal supply is less susceptible to geopolitical conjuncture. That is why the scientists, researchers and engineers have been actively working on the development of the innovative, reliable, cost-effective and efficient technologies for production, processing and use of the oil and gas replacement fuels applicable for a wide spectrum of the industrial and power generation needs.

There are two major directions of the oil/gas replacement by coal-based fuels possible:

The First direction is corresponding to creating the coal-based fuels, which will be suitable for the use at the coal-fired boilers previously converted to fuel oil and/or natural gas, as well as for oil-gas boilers, ovens, turbines, internal combustion engines, etc. Coal-Water Fuels (CWF), Synthetic Liquid Fuel (SLF), Syngas (SG) are considered nowadays as feasible alternative to fuel oil and natural gas. Special interest is given to the cost-effectiveness of the entire process ranging from coal (or/and its waste) preparation and coal-based fuel production to efficient low-emission combustion for heat and power production. . It is very important to take into account all possible environmental aspects as well as issues with additional treatment of low-quality coal or coal wastes, specific power consumption, combustion optimization, etc.

The Second direction is corresponding to coal-fired boilers, that use oil/gas fuel to improve combustion stability and for the load control. The areas of main interest here are: advanced methods of ignition intensification and stabilization of pulverized coal flame, the best practices on efficient combustion of various coal mixtures at the power plants for the purposes of ignition, combustion, ash removal improvement The ultimate goal is to get rid of using natural gas and fuel oil for combustion stability improvement as well as development of the cost-effective ways to utilize the coal with a high sulfur and other constituents content.

Event format

The upcoming event is a combination of scientific/engineering conference and an open forum for the productive networking between the representatives from the Government, private organizations and scientists, professional researchers and developers, who offer their projects, developments and innovations in the area of coal-based and coal-waste fuels to industrial implementation.

The oral presentation of the project results is very efficient way to communicate all aspects and details of the development with emphasis to the benefits and key features. Furthermore, the developer has possibility to discuss the details of the project or presented idea with the experts in the field and interested audience.
